In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
