French authorities will start stopping small boats in Channel following British demands
France has agreed to begin intercepting small boats in the English Channel, after months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the official ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential method to disable the propellers of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, following a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Now French authorities will again be allowed to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the start of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
