An Forecasting Platform Trader Earned $436K from Wagers Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.
An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of NicolĂ¡s Maduro just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.
Sudden Shift in Forecasts
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that NicolĂ¡s Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been seized.
One account, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.
However the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in positions just before the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information," commented an industry expert.
A small number of other traders also profited significant sums from similar wagers.
Political Attention Grows
Elected officials are starting to take note.
A bill introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Market Background
Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to politics.
The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. But it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.
Insider trading is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
